May/June 2013

2011 Benovia Winery Chardonnay Russian River Valley

Light, bright gold.  Fresh orchard and pit fruit aromas are complemented by notes of sweet butter and vanilla.  Pliant, spice- and smoke-accented pear and nectarine flavors show very good depth and pick up a gingery nuance with air.  Clings nicely on the persistent finish, which leaves toasty lees and pear skin notes behind.  90

2011 Benovia Winery Grenache Sonoma Mountain

(raised in neutral French oak):  Bright ruby-red.  Fresh raspberry and floral scents are complicated by notes of peppery spices and minerals.  Juicy and smooth in texture, with very good lift and focus to its sweet red fruit and lavender pastille flavors.  Shows a tangy quality on the finish, which leaves sweet cherry and white pepper notes behind.  This wine is made from fruit grown in a single vineyard owned by winemaker Mike Sullivan's family called Four Brothers and includes some syrah, carignan and alicante bouschet.  (JR) 91

2011 Benovia Winery Pinot Noir Bella Una

Bright ruby-red.  Black raspberry and cherry-cola on the highly perfumed nose and in the mouth.  Sappy and pliant, with slow-building tannins molding the spice-accented finish, with its echo of cola.  Offers an attractive blend of richness and energy and drinks very well with an hour or so of air.  91

2011 Benovia Winery Pinot Noir Cohn Vineyard Sonoma County

Ruby-red.  Blackberry, cherry and musky herbs on the nose, with a floral quality gaining strength with air.  Initially taut bitter cherry and dark berry flavors stretch and flesh out with air, picking up sweetness and a touch of vanilla bean.  Shows very good focus and energy on the finish, which features youthful, gripping tannins and a touch of cola.  91

2011 Benovia Winery Pinot Noir La Pommeraie

Full ruby.  Pungent aromas of dried red fruits, anise, cola and vanilla.  Supple and broad, with very good depth to its raspberry and cherry compote flavors.  Gains energy with air and finishes on a sexy floral note, with silky tannins coming on late and adding grip.  Very approachable now but has the depth to suggest that it will reward patience.  91

2011 Benovia Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Dark ruby.  Ripe cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by notes of sandalwood and candied lavender.  Smooth and open-knit, offering sweet dark berry flavors and a touch of mocha.  Clings nicely on the finish, which strongly repeats the cherry and floral notes.  No tannins to get in the way of drinking this fruit-driven pinot now. 90
